We have some great races, wins by Tiong Smith in the 500 and Gwyn-Rowsom in the 1600. 2/13 CHSAA Varsity Championships- We had a good day in Staten Island as 3 knights are able to punch their tickets to the State Federation meet. Dominick Ronan runs a personal best in the 1600 meters to take 3rd, Giancarlo Cipri does the same in the 3200 meters. Matt Baker cpomes up big and wins the CHSAA Catholic State Title with a 46' triple jump. We get 2 relays into the finals and medal in both relays (4x200-3rd place and 4x400- 2 nd place.) For the 8th championship in a row we place in the top 3 (including all seasons)
1/31 NYCHSAA Sectional and BQ/NY City Champs- There are days when you know that you just have to put it all out there in order to accomplish your goals. This was one of those days. The breaks seemed to be going to the other teams all day long. To their credit the Cardinals from Hayes brought their A game and the came after us since we were the defending champs. One fact that is true about our team is that competition brings out the best in us. We had a hard fought battle to win the Sectional and City title. for Sectionals we had to fend off Hayes and Fordham Prep. For the city title, the Stanners from Molloy showed that they were ready to race and once again Fordham was in the Hunt. Our Day started off with 2 victories, Giancarlo Cipri ran a tactical race to take the Sectional and City 3200 meter title. He was able to run negative splits running the last 400 in 62 seconds. Next up was the 4x400 of Woody, Oettl, Colter and Kiarie-Mumbi, Hayes was in the lead till the last leg when Kiarie dropped the hammer and pulled away for the win. In the 800 Tiong Smith grabbed 3rd place, while Matt Baker soared to a school and Meet record of 46'6" in the triple jump. This effort would net him the MVP of the meet. Two Juniors, Busutill and McGraw found their ways into the scoring with 5th place finished in their respective jumps (triple and High). The 1000 meters saw two sophomores step up and score as Gywn-Rowsom and MacDonnell were able to get 4th and 5th in the section. Their effort was lead by Dom Ronan who ran two great races taking 3rd in both the 1000 and 600 meters. By this time we were ahead of Hayes 43-41 with 5 events to go in the sectionals. The 400 meters became a huge race for us as Ryan Woody ran a perfect race to grab the title. Meanwhile Soph Val Ferraro showed that he is truly a varsity athlete as he ran a gutsy race to grab 5th place and a huge point that we needed to stay ahead of Hayes. We were tied with Archibishop Molloy at 23 with Fordham close behind at 20. Over the next two events, All three teams would pull even with 29 points in the City battle. This is where the never say die attidtude of the Knights came into play. We were able to score big points in the 3200 Relay thanks to two sophs and two seniors. Kiarie then went out and on tired legs ran a tough 300 to put us ahead. The Last event of the meet was the City 4x200 meter relay final. Seeded 4th from the trials, the knights had their work cut out for them. A great lead off leg by Defreitas put us in the running and Baker got us right up on Hayes' shoulder. Obas ran the race of his life to give the stick to Javier Ovalles in striking distance. Ovalles would not be denied as he dropped a monster 21.98 to secure the win, the meet record but most importantly the SCHOOL RECORD. It is so hard to win a title in this league, but to do it two years on a row is a great testament to how hard the team has worked this year. The coaches could not be prouder.
1/16 Stanner Games-Great races and times against some of the top teams on the east coact. Dom Ronan, Giancarlo Cipri, Andrew Defreitas and Andrew Kiarie-Mumbi post some of the top times of the season as the Varsity uses the Stanner games as a tune up for the Championship season.
1/9 Freedom Games- We sent 20 guys to Staten Island for this new meet and they ran great. We saw fast times in every event from the 300(3 guys under 37) to the 1600(3 guys under 4:35) Dom Ronan hits a big pr in the 1000 Meters and helps Raph Oettl claim the Sophomore School Record.. 1/8 Weight Sectionals and Hayes Games- It was a late night at Fordham, but it was worth the wait as a vast majority of the guys at this meet drop big pr's. Aidan Donahue and Fergus MacDonnell win their Varsity events and lead the way in scoring for the team. 1/3/16- CHSAA
Weight and Novice Championships and Varsity Invitational- Bret
Bernstein and Andrew Zawistowski (Xavier class of 2034) came by to see the
squad in action. They were not disappointed as the team began to
make changes to the ATX lists. The Weight champs was highlighted by
Andrew Hernandez who won the Midget 55 meter dash in school record
time. The Varsity 4x200 posted the #10 time in the USA with a season
best 1:31.43 posting. The Varsity 4x800 put two teams ion the top
5 with the A team posting the #11 time in the USA with an 8:08
time. The SMR hit 3:40 which ranks them #6 in the country. 12/26 North Shore Invite- Here are the race assignments. BE ON TIME If you are not listed here you are racing at Grinch Games. Both teams under 1:35, the A team breaking 1:32 ( 4th year in a row) They also post the #5 NY and #9 USA time. Dom Ronan proves that he is a miler with his personal best (#7 NY and #12 USA time) 12/19 Ignatian Games Some great races. We run 21 relays. Lots of personal best.
