2016 NYCHSAA Sectional and City Champs  BACK to BACK Titles

1/31 NYCHSAA Sectional and BQ/NY City Champs- There are days when you know that you just have to put it all out there in order to accomplish your goals.  This was one of those days.  The breaks seemed to be going to the other teams all day long.  To their credit the Cardinals from Hayes brought their A game and the came after us since we were the defending champs.  One fact that is true about our team is that competition brings out the best in us.  We had a hard fought battle to win the Sectional and City title.  for Sectionals we had to fend off Hayes and Fordham Prep.  For the city title, the Stanners from Molloy showed that they were ready to race and once again Fordham was in the Hunt.  Our Day started off with 2 victories, Giancarlo Cipri ran a tactical race to take the Sectional and City 3200 meter title.  He was able to run negative splits running the last 400 in 62 seconds.  Next up was the 4x400 of Woody, Oettl, Colter and Kiarie-Mumbi, Hayes was in the lead till the last leg when Kiarie dropped the hammer and pulled away for the win.  In the 800 Tiong Smith grabbed 3rd place, while Matt Baker soared to a school and Meet record of 46'6" in the triple jump.  This effort would net him the MVP of the meet.  Two Juniors, Busutill and McGraw found their ways into the scoring with 5th place finished in their respective jumps (triple and High).  The 1000 meters saw two sophomores step up and score as Gywn-Rowsom and MacDonnell were able to get 4th and 5th in the section.  Their effort was lead by Dom Ronan who ran two great races taking 3rd in both the 1000 and 600 meters. By this time we were ahead of Hayes 43-41 with 5 events to go in the sectionals. The 400 meters became a huge race for us as Ryan Woody ran a perfect race to grab the title.  Meanwhile Soph Val Ferraro showed that he is truly a varsity athlete as he ran a gutsy race to grab 5th place and a huge point that we needed to stay ahead of Hayes. We were tied with Archibishop Molloy at 23 with Fordham close behind at 20.  Over the next two events, All three teams would pull even with 29 points in the City battle. This is where the never say die attidtude of the Knights came into play.  We were able to score big points in the 3200 Relay thanks to two sophs and two seniors.  Kiarie then went out and on tired legs ran a tough 300 to put us ahead.  The Last event of the meet was the City 4x200 meter relay final.  Seeded 4th from the trials, the knights had their work cut out for them.  A great lead off leg by Defreitas put us in the running and Baker got us right up on Hayes' shoulder.  Obas ran the race of his life to give the stick to Javier Ovalles in striking distance.  Ovalles would not be denied as he dropped a monster 21.98 to secure the win, the meet record but most importantly the SCHOOL RECORD.  It is so hard to win a title in this league, but to do it two years on a row is a great testament to how hard the team has worked this year.  The coaches could not be prouder.

1/18 NYCHSAA Freshman / Sophomore Championships-  A great meet for us in Staten Island.  The Freshman and Sophomores put down some of their best times for the season.  The sophomores crown 7 sectional champions on the way to a 2nd place finish.  The Freshmen get some gutsy performances out of the team.  The Sophomores won the 600 (MacDonnell), 1000 (Crorkin), 1600 (Oettl), 3200 (Gywn-Rowsom), Long Jump ( Ramierez), 4x400 Relay ( Ferraro, Ponce, Oettl, Crorkin) and the 4x800 relay (Gwyn-Rowsom, MacDonnell, Donahue, Vitarelli)

1/16  Stanner Games-Great races and times against some of the top teams on the east coact.  Dom Ronan, Giancarlo Cipri, Andrew Defreitas and Andrew Kiarie-Mumbi  post some of the top times of the season as the Varsity uses the Stanner games as a tune up for the Championship season.

1/13 Millrose Time Trials-  Some fast times as the Knights qualifiy two relays for this prestigious meet.(We are the only team to have 2 relays at the meet)  The 4x200 drops a 1:31.17 on the way to qualifying and the 4x800 posts an 8:04 as they edge Fordham prep for the final spot

1/9  Freedom Games-  We sent 20 guys to Staten Island for this new meet and they ran great.  We saw fast times in every event from the 300(3 guys under 37) to the 1600(3 guys under 4:35)  Dom Ronan hits a big pr in the 1000 Meters and helps Raph Oettl claim the Sophomore School Record..

1/8  Weight Sectionals and Hayes Games-  It was a late night at Fordham, but it was worth the wait as a vast majority of the guys at this meet drop big pr's.  Aidan Donahue and Fergus MacDonnell win their Varsity events and lead the way in scoring for the team.

1/3/16- CHSAA Weight and Novice Championships and Varsity Invitational- Bret Bernstein and Andrew Zawistowski (Xavier class of 2034) came by to see the squad in action.  They were not disappointed as the team began to make changes to the ATX lists.  The Weight champs was highlighted by Andrew Hernandez who won the Midget 55 meter dash in school record time.  The Varsity 4x200 posted the #10 time in the USA with a season best 1:31.43 posting.  The Varsity 4x800 put two teams ion the top 5  with the A team posting the #11 time in the USA with an 8:08 time.  The SMR hit 3:40 which ranks them #6 in the country.

- 2nd Place at NY State Federation Championships

Mr. Dormer with the Hardware
11/21 NY Federation Championships-  In the closest battle in meet History the Knights take 2nd place by a mere  2 points.  As a team not even mentioned as having a chance to win by the experts in the State, the Knights proved that they were more than capabale of making a run for the title.  Lead by inspired team running that placed the top 5 within 33 seconds of each other, the runners from the concrete jungle proved that they were comfortable in any setting.  When I started coache over 20 years ago, I was happy if  we could get one or two runners into the meet, but to watch 7 guys post top 25 ATX performances on the same day takes my breath away.  The Knights did what all Knights do, they left it all out on the course.

11/21 Jesuit Champs at VCP- Whata great end to the season as the team honors the memory of Brooklyn Prep and puts on a great performance..  Many of the seniors run great times for their last time.

11/14- CHSAA Championships-SO CLOSE.  An insprired day at VCP.  The day started off great as the JV C ran some great PR's as they took 3rd place.  They would set the tone for the day as all teams finished in the top 3 on the day. Mena, Brady, Berg and Norako all break 16 minutes to lead the team.  Next up was the Varsity.  The team ran great placing all 7 guys in the top 28. All 5 scorers in the top 19.  We lose a tough one to St. Anthony's  42-54.  Christian Raslowsky and Giancarlo Cipri both finish in the top 7 to receive All League A team honors. It really was a close one as the two teams got 5 scorers in the top 20 but the numbers just were not in our favor.  The JV A comes up big with a huge win.  Aidan Donohue takes 2nd as an individual to lead to squad. Great pack running puts 3 guys in the top 5 of the race.  On the last race of the day, Neil
McEnerney comes up big taking 2nd place to lead the team to a 3rd place tie with Kellenberg.

We qualify for the NY State Federations for the 8th time in school history 5th year in a row (
1999, 2000, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014)

11/7 CHSAA SOPH CHAMPS- DOMINANT WIN.  That is the only way I can think of describing what happened on the hallowed fields of VCP for the Class of 2018 this past weekend.  It was a perfect day for the Soph Squad who were determined to run their own race.  That race plan worked out great as the rest of the league was waiting to see what they would do.  Relaxed to the bridge was the game plan for all the Sophs, but that is where the flood gates openned.  In the A race, Our team moved at the Bridge, Raph and Sawyer would pull away from the fiedl after Highway hill and Mike, Aidan and Fergus would push the pace thru the hills.  Jerardo(14th man to break 15 this season) and Xander would make sure that no one else would be able to get close. All 5 scorers would be in the top 15 of the race.  The 5 man Average would be the 6th fastest 5 man average in school history among the Varsity.  Last year as freshmen, they finished a distance 3rd, this year as Sophomores they won by 44 points.  The B squad was also looking to make some history of their own.  They would pack 5 scores into the top 13 of their race and post a sub 16 min 5 man average  Cruz and Lewis post huge pr's as they place 2nd and 4th in the race.  Truly a great day for the Sophomore Knights.  As always it was great to hear the Fight Song after the victory.

11/7 CHSAA FROSH  CHAMPS   The Freshmen make a statement as a majority for the team hits personal bests for their championships.  The A Squad is lead by Anderson, Sherlock and Fitzgerald who all make the All time Xavier list with their sub 10 min posting.  The team is able to get a tie for 8th place with Monsignor Farrell.  The B Squad is lead by Bastionello who runs an inspired monster Pr and breaks the 10 min barrier on his way to a top 10 finish.  Not to be out done the C squad rallys for a 4 th place team finish.  A great way to end the league season for the Freshmen.  Next up for them is Jesuits on Nov 21st.

10/31- NYCHSAA Sectionals and NYC City Champs-  A great day in the park.  After 5 years in a row of finishing 2nd (2010-2014)The Varsity is able to take the NYCHSAA title for the 3rd time in school history.  Also we were able tyo take the NYC Champs defeating all the BQ schools as well.  Christian Raslowski lowers his personal best to 12:51.  In the Sectional scoring, it is Sophomore Michael Crorkin whose pr on the day seals the win for us.  Not to be outdone the JV runs a great race placing all 5 scorers in the top 7 seperated by 10 seconds.  Solid performance.  The Freshman run a great race and take 3rd as a squad.

10/17- Nassau Coaches Invitational- We were looking for a fast 5K for the Varsity to run and we certainly found that at Bethpage state park.  The Soph squad that was running it's 3 race in 8 days, was led by Zion Lewis and they were able to take 3rd place in a very competative race.  Next up was the JV and they ran Great.  The top 7 JV guys were all in the top 15 of this huge race. Sophomore Aidan Donahue leads this squad as he breaks 18 mins. They post a 5 man average of 18:13  Next to toe the line was the Varsity and they would run some great times.  We get 6 guys in the top 9 of the race and all 6 break 17 Minutes.  On the Day we win 2 races, have an individual winner, and 2 nd place finishes, not a bad day on the Island

10/17 Freshman XC Relays at VCP The Freshmen take on the annual relays. The A team scores medals  Anderson runs the fastest lead off leg on the day, with Bastianello running the fastest interior leg.  We pu 5 teams across the line, one of the largest teams on the day

The 2015 NYCHSAA SOPHOMORE CHAMPIONS (traditional pose)
10/14- NYCHSAA Sophomore Sectionals-  Sophs take the team title for the 4th Year in a row.  Aidan Donohue is the 5th Individual winner for Xavier in a row.  Great team racing  4 seconds seperate the top 5 as they sweep the top 5 spots to win. Great effort as Xavier fields the largest Soph Squad on the day.

10/10 Manhattan College Invitational-  History is made, Raslowsky is the 1st Knight to win a race at the largest meet in the country. The Varsity sets the school record in the 5 Man Average, Raphael Oettl takes down the Sophomore school record. The JV takes 3rd in the fastest JV race of the day.  The Sophomores take 4th and the Freshmen post a 7:13 5 man average.

10/9 All Hallows-  The rain ended the meet early, but the Freshmen got their race in and they ran tough in the rain.

9/28- McQuaid Invitational-  Our annual trip up north bears some great results  Despite the cold wet weather, the team came to race.  First up was the JV, lead by the duo of Kaufmann and Parker, both who ran very even splits the team would take 7th place.  Next up was the Soph Squad ledby Fergus MacDonnell who found his way into the record books by posting a sub 17:30 time.
The Varsity took the line next and they did not disappoint.  At the 2 mile mark all 8 guys running Varsity were under 11 mins. Raslowsky would throw down a school record with a 15:10.2 posting with 4 guys breaking 15:40.  We would finish 2nd as a team to Pittsford Mendon the #3 team in the state. Our 15:36.4 5 man average would be good enough for us to win the Glavin Cup for the 3rd year in a row

9/26 Xavier Invitational-  A Perfect fall day at the park.  Cooler weather lead to fast times.  Up first were the Freshman A race  Fitzgerald and Hoey pace the team with a sub 11 minute posting.  In Freshman B Race we have 3 guys go under the 11 minute barrier (Sherlock, keyes and Moriority)  Both Freshman Squads take 3rd place as a team..  In the Soph Race Aidan Donohue and Fergus MacDonnell pace the team with 5 Sophs under 16 Minutes. They also take 3rd.  The Juniors have Kaufmann up front as he breaks 15 minutes to lead them to a 2nd Place finish.   The Varsity then go out and run a great race placing 4 guys in the top 9.  They win the race posting a 13:31 5 man average.  3rd team win in 8 days A great weekend

.

Season starts off strong with guys racing together
9/19 Monroe-Woodbury Pre State Invitational- As is our tradition we look for a good test to start the season.  Many state "experts" consider us an after thought for the race.  We go on and run a disciplined race and we end up with a great victory.  A great way to start the season.  But it was a very hot day and as we all know hard work now will yeild good results later in the season.   On the Merge of all varsity races we take 4th.  On the day we defeat 25 teams that were ranked in the pre season, including 3 who were ranked ahead of us

9/19- Regis Invitational-  Capatin Pat Sullivan, who is recovering from a wrist injury, leads the rest of the seniors with a 15:19 posting. A solid start to the season, the Sophs look solid as a squad and the Freshmen get their 1st taste of competition.  Congrats to Regis for having its largest meet ever (54 teams and over 1,000 runners)
