INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD 2016-2017

3/10-3/11 NB Nationals- The season finale saw 2 of our relays go up against the Nation's finest.  On Friday Night the Distance medley Relay Of Oettl, DeFreitas, Crorkin and Cipri went out and ran the #2ATX time.  They were in the hunt the whole way and were able to finish 8th in the nation behind the strength of Cipri's pr for 1600 meters (4;25)  On Saturday night in the last race of the day, the 4 juniors who make up the squad (Gywn-rowsom, Crorkin, MacDonnell, and Oettl) came ready to race and race they did.  They posted a new School Record and grabbed 3rd place in the nation.  They become the latest Knights to earn All American honors (#21-24)

3/4 NY Federation Champs-  3 Knights travel to Oceanbreeze to take on the top pblic school athletes. Crorkin and Oettl led the CHSAA in their events.

2/28  Eastern States- The 4x200 and 4x800 take another shot at qualifing for nationals.  The 4x800 drops a school record, The #1 time on the State and #9 time in the USA

2/25 Pre Nationals-  In one of the last tune ups before Federations and the Nationals, we see some great times to end the season.

2/11 CHSAA Varsity Championships-  To win a CHSAA championship it takes talent, hard work and alot of luck.  We had 2 of 3 of these things on Saturday. It seemed that everything was against us, but the Knights kept on trying and competing.  Right down to the last event, the 4x200 runs and inspired race making the ATX list.  Cipri and Oettl make the Federation meet,

2/4 Frosh and Soph CHSAA Championships- The results are in.  Both the freshman team and the Sophomore team finish in the top 10.  Some great personal best performances.

1/29 NYCHSAA Sectional and NY/BQ City Championships- What a great day at the Armory.  A complete team effort is needed to win the Sectional and City Title, and that is what we got for the entire team.  The day got off the right start as Dorian Ryan took the Sectional 55 title and qualified for the City final.  Up next was the distance crew that saw 3 guys run 10 mins or faster as Cipri- Gwyn Rowsom and Donahue collected 8 city and Sectional points.  In the sectional competion, we were out to a great start with 14 points and we never looked back.  The scoring in the city meet was a little more difficult. Val Ferraro and Xavier Sweet both scored in the Sectional hurdles and Val qualified for the City final.  The 4x400 of Lewis, Colter, Tria  and Macdonnell picked up 2 points and the team was really rolling then.  The key to the sectional title ios the back scorers, guys who work really hard everyday in practice and wait for their time to shine.  They got their chance on Sunday as the A and B 4x200 teams scored big in the Sectional final, and we racked up 7 points in the 1000 meters as Oettl and Norako both scored (1st and 5th). At this point, we were ahead in the section 30-12 over Fordham and we trailed St Francis by a point in the city scoring.  This is when luck was on our side, 2 Sophs (Knoff and Demetriades) tie for 2nd in the Section in the high jump and 4th in the city High bring with them need points.  Pat Heaney made the Shot final and added to our total.  Then we got to the 400 and 600  where Andrew Defreitas and Michael Crorkin combined to bring home 10 points for the section.  With 3 events left, we trailed St. Francis Prep by 1/2 a point for the title and that is when our team depth showed.  We scored 7 points in the 1600 meters, 7 points in the 4x800 (1st and 5th) 7 points in the 4x200 final.  No other team could withstand the onslaught as these 21 points propelled us to our 3rd Sectional and City indoor title in a row.  A greta team effort.

1/21 New Balance Games-  A Monster Day.  The DMR runs a great race, Posting the #2 ATX. #1 NYS and #5 USA time. The first 3 legs all hit personal bests.  The 4x200 posts our fastest time of the year 1:32.67.  Not to be outdone, Dorian Ryan crushes the school record in the 55 meter dash (#2 in the CHSAA)  The 4x800 runs an inspired race  as all four juniors run to personal bests (or projected personal bests).

1/16 Frosh Soph Sectionals- Great performances by the Freshman and Sophomores as they take 5th and 4th respectively.  Big time races by many of the guys. Results and an update to come soon.

1/13  Jesuits- At Fordham  Some great performances at Jesuits.  The 4x200 takes Gold, the Shot relay takes Bronze and the 4x400 runs agressively.  Vitarelli wins the 1600 with a sub 5 performance

C1xbweawgaahbed
1/9 Grand Prix Trials-  The 4x800 meter Relays post some fast times.  The B and C teams drop the hammer on the competiton as the run their fastest times of the year.  Not to be outdone the A 4x800 runs the #5 Time in the USA and secures a spot in the Grand Prix final in Feburary.  The 4x200 hits a snag as a falling runner from another team wipes out our squad.

1/7 Freedom Games-  Despite the weather we get some fast times as the guys who get to compete run some real fast times.  Cipri takes on some tough compas he hits 9:34 as his openning 3200 meters.  All the guys in the 1000 crush it and run super tough.  The Sprinters post some hot time ins the 300

1/6  Hayes Games/ Weight Sectionals-The weight squad posts some hot times as we kick off the championship season.  Lane medals in the high jump and the 4x800 takes 3rd in a tough race.  In the hayes Games, Sawyer gwyn-Rowsom drops a league leading time in the 3200 meters claiming the Meet record and MVP honors.  Oliver Branham Upton and Ethan Rice prove our Frosh are able to run with the varsity as they run impressive times in the 3200.  Not to be outdone Gregory and Verengia take 2-3 in the 600  The jumping Sophs take 1-2 in the varsity high jump.  PAt Heaney leads all the throwers with a pr of 42'

12/29 CHSAA Junior Weight Novice ChampsA good meet for us over break.  Some great individual performances.  The field event guys come up big with some personal bests and taking 1-2 in novice shot out.  Grant Lane wins the weight high jump as the soph High jumpers medal.  Ethan Rameriez pr's just shy of the 20' barrier.  The Varsity DMR runs all by themselves and breaks 11 mins for the #6 time in NY State. The 4x200 posts our fastest time of the year.  The Weight 4x800 records a huge victory.  Overall a very positive meet.

11/19 NY STate Federation Champs- A tough day in Bowdin park.  The Varsity squad takes 11th as a team  This is the 3rd best finish in school history.  Sawyer Gwyn Rowsom  steps up and pops a huge performance.  Michael Crorkin drops a 20 second personal best.  Oliver Branham Upton runs tough as a frosh and he places 4th for our team

11/19 Jesuits- A great finish to the season for a majority fo the team.  We represent both Xavier and Brooklyn prep so we split our strength, but they Knights rise to the occasion.  Gregpry leads the Frosh into battle and O'Brien leads the Varsity  Great to see theunderclassmen tepping up to run tough.

The Varsity 7 with Heavy D
11/12 CHSAA Champs-  The day started with the skies being Xavier blue. It ended with the best finish in School History.  A few historical facts,  No city School has won the title since 1994(Farrell), No Manahttan school has won the title since 1974 (Power Memorial).  Xavier has not won the title since 1931 when there were only 7 teams in the league. All of that changed this past Saturday in the park.  In addition the JV took 2nd in all levels. (A,B,C).
The Day started off with the JV C race and our squad was paced by 2 sophs (Abernathy and Ruiz) who were looking to break the mythical 15 minute barrier  They came close and scored personal bests as they along with Brady, Ioverio and Cruz all placed in the top 16 to grab 2nd place behind St. Anthony's.
Next up was the Varsity squad who were favored to win this race.  Many other teams were in the mix but the Knights ran a great team race.  Cipri made his play for the individual title and became the 3rd Knight to finish 2nd (D'emic and Rice).  Then our guys came in close to each other, Oettl, Crorkin Gywn-Rowsom and Donahue all crossed the line in the top 26 of the race.  Donohue's finish as our 5th man sealed the deal and brought home the title. Branham-Upton broke 14 to be the 2nd fastest Freshman on the day.
The JV A race saw Pat Naroko run an inspired race to lead the squad as they grabbed 2nd in the JV Championships.  Pat had company from some underlcassmen ( O'Brien and Perez) as the Jv made some noise.  The Last race of the day saw two of our guys go 1-2 in the race as Xander Viteralli and Jimmy Lunny ran tough to pace the squad.
On the day we had 6 guys break 14:00, 16 Guys Break 15:00, 32 guys break 16:00.  We picked up 3 Second place finished for the JV Squads. (no city team beat us)  and Most importantly we brought home the elusive Cross country title.

We qualify for the NY State Federations for the 9th time in school history 6th year in a row ( 1999, 2000, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015)

Since I know you love history like I do, here is the 1931 Article from the NY times about the last time Xavier won.

Alumni Race- To Start the day off we have 6 Alumni win the Alumni race.  (1st time since 1985) Always great to have the support of the alumni.

11/5 CHSAA FROSH SOPH CHAMPS- Great day at the Park  The Underclassmen collect 5 top 3 performances.  Once again we prove that we are the top team in the city as we battle St Anthony's nd Chaminade all day for the top 3 spots. Huge races by the Frosh as 19 of them hit personal bests.  The Frosh A team is pace by the fact that all 7 guys break 10 for the first time this season.  Not to be outdone James Verrengia drops the hammer as he wins the B race.  The C squad follows up with a huge performance that saw the entire group hit personal bests.  Next up was the Sophs who step up just like they have all season.  4 guys break 15 and 6 guys on the A squad drop Pr's.  Then the B team took the course and grabbed 3rd as well  5 Races % top 3 finishes  the Furture looks bright indeed.

10/29 NYCHSAA Sectionals-  A Historic Day at VCP. for the 4th time in School history we take the Varsity Sectional Crown. (2nd Year in a row)  For the 3rd time we take the Freshman Crown BUT for the first time in school history we take all 4 races at Sectionals and the Combined City Champs.  We also have the individual winner of every race.  The Freshman B and The JV score a perfect 15 on their way to a championship.  So many guys stepped it up, so many guys came to race and as a result we were dominant.  No Question about who the best team in the City is now. The first race of the Day saw 6 Freshmen break 10 for the first time this season.  Huge personal bests by all 7.  Up Next was the Freshman B race, and they ran as a group as 5 of them cross the line before any other team  They led by the cow path and held the pace to the finish line.  The Varsity Race went out slow and our guys made their move by the bridge.  We would get 3 of the top 4 spots. All 5 scorers in the top 11 as we roll to a huge win.  we take the Sectional and city Crown for the 2nd year in a row.  As Great as all these races were what the JV did next was unprecedented.  They place the first 6 guys across the line and the 7th knight was 8 overall in the race.  On this day we left no doubt who the best team was.

10/15 Nassau Coaches Meet- For the 3rd year in a row we are able to win the Nassau coaches meet.  This year the varsity runs  a great race as they finish 5 guys in the top 13 of the race.  Jerardo Perez leads the varsity with a sub 18 min posting.  Two Sophs (O'Brien and Amderson) step up big time to finish top in the race.  The JV run a great team race and take 2nd as a squad.  They take down Chaminade as Zion Lewis leads them with a sub 18:30 performance..  The Sophs run tough and take 3rd with Julian Bastionello leading the way

10/1 McQuaid Invitatonal-  What a great meet.  As always we had a great time as we travel north to visit our Jesuit brothers.  the weather was a little wet, but the Knights ran great.  First up were the JV and they ran a great race.  Branham-Upton and Rice led the JV squad as they posted the #2 and #3 ATX Frosh time for the course.  the JV would place all 7 scorers under 18 mins as they grabbed 3rd Place as a team. They also set the School record for 5 man Jv average. Next up were the Sophs, led by Staten Island's own Mike O'Brien who broke 17 mins ( not bad for a guy running his 1st Xc season)  Then the Varsity toed the line.  A disciplined race had the top 5 finish within 23 seconds of each other. They did not let the weather or the sloppy conditions slow them down as they took 2nd place in the AA race and 3rd Place on the merge of all the Varsity Races (out of 228 teams).  for the 4th year in a row we were able to win the Glavin Cup.  This award goes to the fastest Jesuit team at the McQuaid meet.
