OUTDOOR TRACK 2012

6/14-6/16 New Balance Nationals- A long journey to end the season, the DMR, Wagner, Giglio and Barnes trek to North Carolina.  Giglio takes 4th in EE Hammer, Barnes takes 12th In EE Javelin, the DMR is 20th at Nationals and Edward Wagner becomes the 1st Outdoor ALL AMerican in XAvier History.  (13th over all).

Anything that was left in the changing room is now in 3L7.  You have till Thursday to collect it otherwise out it goes.  Also the changing room is off limits till September.

6/8-6/9 NY State Federation Championships- Wagner  goes after the state title in the 400 Hurdles.  In two tremendous races, Edward Wagner posted  two impressive 400 Hurdle times.  His 2nd place finish at Feds is the highest finish in school history.  His time 53.04 (FAT) lowers the school record by 1.21 seconds.

Victorious 4x1600 relay with their plaque.
6/3 Eastern States-  A great way to end the season.  The 4x1600 takes the title and the 4x800 breaks 8 minutes for the first time in school history.  Edward Wagner run 22.04 FAT for the 200.  The Freshman take the school record in the SMR and the CHSAA League record in the 4x400.

5/26- CHSAA CHAMPIONSHIPS- A valiant effort as the team takes 3rd for the 2nd time in a row.  This ties the best finish in school history.  (Not bad for a team with not track of it's own) The Meet started off positively as we scored 12 points in the 1st 2 events.  Edward Wagner defended his 400 Hurdle title( first Xavier hurdler to win back to back hurdle titles), Dom Deniro would take 3rd in 400 hurdles and John Rice runs tough and grabs 3rd in the Steeplechase. (an amazing feat for a Freshman).  The field events would score critical points, We scored in the SHot put, Javelin(2 guys), High Jump and Long Jump.  Dmitri Zuccarello runs an inspired 1600 meters to take 3rd place, and Don Deniro comes back in his speciality the 110 hurdles to grab silver and qualify for the NY Federation State meet.  Great efforts by all as school records fall and personal best are set. We beat all the schools from the city.

The Seniors celebrate after their historic victory
5/19  NYCHSAA Sectionals-  It started slow, the bus from Xavier was late, the meet that was in before us ran late, but none of this could stop the Xavier Knights once they got rolling. The Varsity scored in 16 of 19 events. We had 3 athletes claim 2 sectional wins each. (Deniro 400 Hurdles, 110 Hurdles, Wagner  400 meters, 200 Meters  Zuccarello 3200 Meters, 1600 Meters). The Varsity started scoring big right from the 1st 3 events.  Dom DeNiro grabbed both his gold medals early, that combined with the tremendous effort by underclassmen Rice and Berka in the Steeple, put Xavier out front with 19 points.  Then some of the field events became finals. Jake Bustill and Charlie Lambert and Sean Ortiz all qualified for the finals, With Jake and Charlie taking 2nd and 4th respectively, Scott Midgett and Joe Santangelo scored in the High Jump, Blake Cottam set the school record in the Vault and Gino Giglio picked up 2 points in the discus with his 4th place finish. These 11.5 points pushed us to 30.5 points.  Then the floodgates opened.  Dmitri Zuccarello set the school record in the 3200 with a 9:26.09 posting, with Nick Karam picking up 3rd, Edward Wagner cruised to a win in the 400 and 2 juniors Isidro Camacho and Jimmy Buckley scored in the 800.  This gave us another 19 points  pushing our total to 49.5. The 4x100 made the finals and 2 more field events ended, thus netting us another 10 points and the NYCHSAA Shot Put title. So with 4 events to go we had 59.5 points. In the 1600, Zuccarello put a cap on a tremendous night by winning in an exciting fashion over Regis' top runner Ryan Phillips.  Greg Watch rounded out the scoring in the distance races by breaking 4:30 for the 1st time.  In the Javelin, Sophomore Dennis Barnes grabbed 3rd place.  We would score 24.5 in the field events on the night. The last 2 events would see 2 more sectional crowns come to Xavier, the 4x800 quartet of Camacho, Buckley, Senior Joe Klein and Soph Eliot Kaufamnn ran a beautiful race and captured the gold medal. In the final Event of the night, Edward Wagner raced to a school record to cap off our performance.  A tremendous accomplishment for the team.

5/19 NYCHSAA  Weight Sectionals-  Not to be outdone, the Weight squad posted some great results on their way to a 2nd place finish.  The Junior weight 4x800 crushed the competition to grab the sectional title.  James Galasso breaks 2:20 as he wins the midget 800 Run. Baz Boyce jumps our to win the Long Jump crown.  Overall some great races.

5/11 Loucks Games-  The DMR runs a school record 10:22.  Monster legs by all 4 guys help them to the Medal Stand. A great series performances  highlighted by Edward Wagner's 49.12 FAT for the 400 Meters and Zuccarello's 4:21 for the 1600

5/12 CHSAA Frosh Champs- Records Fall as the Freshman Take 5th place as a team.  John Rice, Joe Santangello and the 4x400 capture the CHSAA crowns. Rice won the 3200 uncontested in a meet record time.  Joe Santeangelo easily wins the high jump( he would have won the Soph HJ as well) with a clearance of 5'10"  The race of the day was the 4x400 as they set the meet record and broke 3:40

5/12 CHSAA Soph Champs-  The Sophs capture the 4x400 crown as well on an exciting come from behind anchor leg by Tre Solomon. Dennis Barnes wins the Javelin

5/9- NYCHSAA Frosh Soph Champs-  The underclassmen both take 2nd place.  The Sophs take 2nd in every season this year.  A great meet, everyone stepped up and ran tough.  Great showing by jumpers as we win 3 jumping events. Coaching Staff is so proud of how the underclassmen showed up to compete.  Splits to come

2/24 Georgetown Invitational-  A successful trip to our nation's capitol.  Some school records fall as Kaufmann takes down the Soph 1000 record.  The Freshman 500 record goes to Charlie Lambert as the varsity 500 goes to Wagner.  An impressive end of the season for a majority of the team.

As a wise man once told me, it takes talent and luck to do well in the championships, and both of them have to show up on the same day.

Gabe Spooner on the big screen last Saturday night.
2/11 Millrose Games- A new venue, a new meet, the same great effort by the Xavier Knights.  Gabe Spooner runs a solid 55 meter dash becoming the first Xavier student to ever run at Millrose as an indvidual.  The Sprint Medley relay then goes out and runs a school record time to grab 2nd place.  Great racing all around as the SMR posts the #10 time nationally.

Camacho, Buckley and Watch all ran aggressively and we were able to take the school record by 5 seconds.

1/28 U.S. OPEN/ MAYOR'S CUP- A full day of Xavier excitement.  The guys who did not work Open house headed up to the Mayor's Cup Meet at the Armory. Despite some scheduling problems, we had some good performances.

Then on Saturday night, a Xavier Crowd of around 100 team members, families, friends and Alumni all cheered the 4x800 meter relay on to the #2 ATX performance.  We finished 4th place less than a second out of 2nd place. 11/12 CHSAA Championships-
This is the 4th time that Xavier has qualified for the NY State Federation Cross Country Championships. ( 1999, 2000, 2007) $th Place as a varsity is our best finish since 2000.  The JV ran a great race and just missed 2nd place over all by 2 pts.  The JV B which was comprised of all underclassmen really impressed as Vazquez and LaRussa come close to breaking 15 minutes.

BEST IN THE CITY

11/5 CHSAA FROSH SOPH CHAMPS A Historical day for the Xavier Cross Country Team.
J.C. Rice wins the individual Frosh Crown with the 2nd Fastest time in League History. J.C. Ran a perfect race on a perfect day for a cross country race. He waited patiently and kicked the LAST 150. to grab the title. The Rest of the Frosh A team followed suit. We had 4 guys break 9 minutes and a 5 man average of 8:46.93. All 7 guys in the Freshmen A race hit personal bests in the race. They showed that they are able to come up big when the pressure is on.  They took 3rd over all, only losing to Chaminade and St. Anthony's.

Not to be out done the Frosh B team took the line about 30 minutes later and they brought forth a tremendous team effort. They placed all 5 scorers in the top 19 places and grab 2nd Place. They posted a 9:47 5 man average, Lead by Paul Barnes and DJ Mat who post personal bests. They only lose to Chaminade.

The Frosh C Team showed they were ready to roll as they take 4th as a team, lead by  Conor McGovern who posts a 30 second personal best to grab 8th place overall.

The Sophomores were next to take the course. Last year as Freshmen they finished 8th and they were looking to improve upon that finish this year. They started out relaxed until the bridge and they began to run in the hills. Eliot Kaufmann bided his time in the hills and he finished with a furious kick to grab 4th place overall. 5 of the top 7 hit personal bests and they were able to grab 3rd place as a team, and like the Freshmen only losing to Chaminade and St. Anthony's..  Not to be out done, the SOph B team place 10 runners under 17 minutes, this type of pack running allowed them to grab 3rd place.

Since the only teams who beat us are located outside of the city, We are the BEST in NYC.
Pictures to come.
