of nominees performance:
Coming
off of a few tough losses Xavier needed some good news to take first half
momentum away from a physical Moore Catholic football team.
After Moore drove the field to take an 8-0 lead, their subsequent
Kickoff was returned for an 80 yard Xavier TD by Demetri Demetriades (So
nice they had to name him twice) to cut the lead to 8-7.
This helped to keep the game close with the score 14-7 Moore
Catholic at the half. During
the second half, Xavier scored 10 unanswered points to take the lead in
the fourth quarter 17-14. On
Xavier’s final drive of the day, having
stopped Moore’s response at the Xavier 19 yard line, the Knights drove
the field and stalled on the Moore 34 with a 4th and 6 to
maintain possession to try to secure the win. This
created another chance for Demetriades to be a hero, getting the handoff
Demetri was hit short of the first down, but he broke the tackle and
gained 22 yards setting Xavier up for their final score to put Moore
Catholic down two scores with little more than 1 minute left in the game.
Demetri is also the only Xavier player to go both ways all day
where he contributed 4 solo tackles, 3 assists and 1 pass defended on
defense as well. Leaving the
Xavier Varsity Soccer team where he started as a sophomore, Demetri also
scored Xavier’s winning touchdown in its only other victory this season
versus St. John the Baptist in 2x overtime. |
