I was a no-show at Aviator Field last Saturday because Clan O'Hara had a gathering out on Long Island from which only members of the NYPD and Rockaway Rugby were excused.  Fortunately, I had an elite flying squad of football correspondents texting me throughout the game.  They are:

John (Doc) Murray DDS '67.  For the second Saturday in a row, the former running back and member of Xavier's legendary 1966 Kaydets made the long (long) trip up from Avon, New Jersey to cheer on his 16th Street gridiron descendants.  (The DDS stands for Demon Dentist of the Jersey Shore.)

Mike Barbieri '80.  Pound for pound, one of the toughest guys ever to wear the Maroon and Blue.  That— and his half-brown, half-blue eyeball— made Mike a true X-Man.  Mike also coached football at Xavier in the 1980's.  Today, he runs the Downtown Giants, a Manhattan-based youth football program that has sent a steady stream of talented football players to 16th Street over the years.

Eddie Lydon.  Proud Mayo rugger and coach of the mysterious Staten Island Knights, the barnstorming summer side reportedly made up of current and former 16th Street Kids.  Eddie is also the father of end and kicker Matt Lydon '16.

Doc Murray (3:55 PM):  Hey, Tom— from the scoreboard, it looks like the Freshmen beat Iona Prep 32-0!!!

Mike Barbieri (4:53 PM):  Early second quarter.  Xavier 7-0.

MB (4:54 PM):  95-yard drive, all on the ground.

MB (5:06 PM):  Xavier running the ball and controlling the clock. Up 13-0.

DM (5:06 PM):  Mid 2nd period.  13-0 Xavier!!!

DM (5:19 PM):  13-7.

Eddie Lydon (5:30 PM):  Xavier leads Xaverian 13 to 7 at halftime.

MB (5:31 PM):  Up 13-7 at half.

DM (5:33 PM):  13-7 halftime.

DM (5:53 PM):  21-7.

MB (5:55 PM):  21-7, seven minutes left in the third quarter.

DM (6:07 PM):  21-7, beginning of the 4th.

MB (6:08 PM):  Starting the fourth quarter.  21-7 and driving.

DM (6:12 PM):  24-7.

DM (6:24 PM):  2 minutes left.

EL (6:30 PM):  Final score:  Xavier 31, Xaverian 7.

DM (6:31 PM):  Final 31-7

MB (6:34 PM):  Final 31-7.

The Demon Dentist (a.k.a. The Bard of Avon... New Jersey) followed up with this after action report:

Hey Tom,

The Knights, leading 13-7 at halftime, made some adjustments during the intermission and went on to win 31-7!  Chris and his staff [Xavier head coach Chris Stevens '83] have the knack of doing that.  In truth, the margin could have been even higher.  The Knights bounced back well from their tough loss to Christ the King.

A good-sized and vocal crowd cheered the guys on.  There seems to be a great spirit developing that I haven't seen in the recent past.  Sons of Xavier was sung after each score and the Cadet Color Guard was there, and so was LTC Roy Campbell— as he always is.  What a terrific Xavier faculty member.  Xavier PresidentJack Raslowsky was there, as well as the Dean of Students Kevin Jacobsen and Headmaster Mike LiVigni.

It looks like this year's Knights are something special!  Hope to be back at Aviator next Saturday for Holy Trinity!  Hope to see you there.

Simply put:  I love Xavier and especially Xavier Football!  I was talking to one of the Xavier dads about the practice ordeal, etc.  Playing football at Xavier has never been easy, but to be a member of the Long Maroon and Blue Line was, and obviously still is, a great thing.  You could even sense from the students in attendance that they think of their football team as something special.

Thanks, Doc!  And Mike!  And Eddie!

The Knights move to 6-1 on the season and host the Titans of Holy Trinity this Saturday at Aviator Field, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 PM.

Stand by...
