Xavier roles to a 41-7 win over St. Peter's

By STEPHEN HART

Xavier’s penchant for big plays proved too much for St. Peter’s Saturday night.

The Knights’ William Solomon had first-half touchdown runs of 77 and 63 yards -- part of a 209-yard, three-TD effort for the contest -- and the Xavier defense had interception returns of 65 and 34 yards for scores as the Manhattan school rolled to a 41-7 CHSFL victory at Brooklyn’s Aviator Complex.

Solomon’s 77-yard scamper to paydirt on the game’s third play from scrimmage set the tone, as Xavier took a commanding 28-0 lead at halftime. The Knights outgained the Eagles on the ground 178-35 for the first half.

The Eagles showed signs of life with a beautiful 80-yard scoring drive to open the third quarter, capped by a 36-yard TD pass from QB Billy Triglianos to Glen Kartalis.

St. Peter’s even caught a break when an apparent 85-yard kickoff return for a TD by Jimmy Wolfer was negated by a penalty. But Wolfer would have the last laugh a few minutes later when he picked off a Triglianos wobbler and returned it 34 yards for a TD. His PAT kick gave the Knights a 35-7 edge with 3:17 left in the third.

A driving rain arrived midway through the fourth quarter to further dampen the Eagles' mood, as Solomon put an exclamation point on his big night with a 3-yard TD run with four minutes left.
