Xavier runs over Moore Catholic, 37-12

, October 18, 2008 10:27 p.m.

It didn’t take long before Moore Catholic got to see firsthand what all the fuss is about regarding Seamus Kelly.

Xavier's senior running back rumbled for a 39-yard touchdown on his team's first play from scrimmage, then ran another in from 33 yards out three offensive plays later as the Knights coasted to a 37-12 CHSFL win at the Aviator Sports Complex, Brooklyn.

Kelly, who ran for 203 yards in a victory at St. Peter’s earlier this season, was coming off an astounding effort last week against Cardinal Hayes, when he amassed 448 all-purpose yards and scored seven TDs.

He didn’t need to have such a heavy workload last night, finishing with only eight carries for 137 yards and sitting out the entire second half. Teammate John Wilson added two long touchdown runs (of 53 and 45 yards) in the second quarter, which ended with the Knights comfortably ahead 30-0.

The Mavericks, who nearly scored on their third series of the game, only to have it end on an interception in the end zone, got on the board in the fourth quarter.

A 21-yard run by Tommy Todaro was followed by two carries of 18 and 13 yards by John Tortora moving the Mavs to the Xavier 24. Three plays later, Tortora struck paydirt from 9 yards out.

Moore followed on its next possession with an 11-play drive capped off by a beautiful 49-yard TD pass from Nick Gonzalez to Johnny Ray.

Todaro finished with 87 yards rushing, while Gonzalez was 8 of 15 for 92 yards in the air. But the Knights’ 365 yards on the ground was too much to overcome.
