Guidance FAQ

What is a guidance counselor?
A guidance counselor helps each student develop academic, emotional, spiritual and interpersonal skills. Your counselor will guide you in making good choices in many aspects of your Xavier career. Your counselor may also act as a liaison between student and teachers, parents, and administrators.

Don't only " bad" students or guys "in trouble" see counselors?
Counselors at Xavier work with all students to ensure academic, emotional, and interpersonal success. Your counselor is a primary source of support during your years at Xavier.

Will I always have the same counselor?
Yes, unless a change is requested, you will have the same counselor for the four years at Xavier.

Can my counselor provide me with a tutor if I am not doing well in a certain subject?
The Guidance department coordinates the supervised study program. Your counselor can arrange for you to attend this program and provide you with an upperclassman as a tutor. Your counselor can also help to arrange other types of tutoring from outside Xavier too.

What is the difference between a counselor and an advisor?
The advisor is the " homeroom" teacher who will also be one of your subject teachers. The advisor can play an important role as an academic support. Counselors will not only provide academic support but will also aid students with learning disabilities, behavioral or emotional issues, and family or personal concerns.

Will my counselor get my homework when I am absent?
If you are absent, you would be responsible for calling a student in each of your classes to obtain missing assignments. A counselor can arrange for your books to be picked up and relay information about your absence to your teachers.
